Benefits of Drinking Coconut Water During Pregnancy

"There is sweet water inside a tender coconut. Who poured the water inside the coconut? Was it the work of any man? No. Only the Divine can do such a thing." - Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Coconut water is mainly praised for its high content of potassium, calcium, magnesium, and lauric acid. So how do these things help a woman during her pregnancy?

Prevent leg cramps. A diet deficient in potassium is a major cause of leg cramps during pregnancy. To prevent this, a pregnant woman must make sure that she's consuming 4,700 milligrams of potassium each day. Drinking coconut water during pregnancy will provide a whopping 670 milligrams per 330ml serving.

Keep bones and teeth strong. Enough calcium intake is a big help to both mother and baby. It is essential in forming strong bones and teeth. But when there's inadequate calcium from the foods that a pregnant woman eats, her body gets it from her own bones, and then supplies it to her baby. This makes the bones weak, which in the long run may lead to serious health problems like osteoporosis. She can avoid this by consuming 1000mg of calcium each day. A 330ml serving of coconut water during pregnancy provides 40mg of calcium.

Prevent pre-eclampsia and poor fetal growth. Magnesium needs during pregnancy depend on the pregnant woman's age. If a woman gets pregnant when she's only 18 years old or younger, her body needs 400mg/day. For pregnant woman age 19 to 30, 350mg/day is needed, while 360mg/day is required for those 31 years old or older. A pregnant woman can get 25mg of magnesium per 330ml serving of coconut water.

Healthier baby. Coconut water and other coco products have a rich amount of lauric acid. Breast milk naturally has it, and the bigger the amount of lauric acid, the more effective the antimicrobial and immune boosting properties of the milk will be. And since our body stores lauric acid in the adipose tissues, drinking coconut water during pregnancy may also help to ensure a successful lactation.

Coconut water is truly one of the most wonderful gifts God unselfishly gave us. And with all its benefits, it's no wonder coconut is called the 'tree of life!'
